jordan peak s rogue society imprint gets straight back into action after taking a year off with a seriously heavyweight package. london producer and dj sam russo known for his outings on respected house and techno labels such as leftroom, vitalik, fear of flying and air london provides us with three stellar tracks that showcase his impeccable production skills. the release also comes backed with high quality remixes from fachwerk head honcho and delsin regular mike dehnert, who takes a tougher approach and turns therapy into a thundering techno tool while chicago born malmö native amir alexander changes the tone of thats what he did on sunday into something much deeper and emotive than sam s original adding variety and depth to another impressive release from the label.

taking up mid/late 1990s minimalist & deadly designer techno vibes

the berlin-based producer is kicking off his label with a four-track single. while he is perhaps not as name-checked as some of the hardware hawking house heads of modern times, arttu snellman has been working hard at gritty box jams for a good few years now. he first appeared under his arttu guise in 2011 with the nuclear funk and fear diluted singles on royal oak and philpot respectively, and then proceeded to wheel out tunes for 4 lux and chiwax over the ensuing years. prior to the tough-edged pump of his current ventures, you could find snellman indulging in a more laptop-centric kind of practice under the name lump. this more minimalistic, glitchy house fodder could be found on labels such as karloff, morris/audio and süd electronic amongst many others. back in the here and now though, arttu was last spotted on clone jack for daze earlier this year with the rave dogz 12”, and next up he’s taking matters into his own hands. existing fans of arttu will be more than pleased with the heavyweight, crunchy tackle that inhabits cyblo01. this is dynamic business with same heft found on previous releases from snellman, mixed in with the cheeky flair that has always marked his productions out in a crowded marketplace.

after a spot of chronological chaos last time out, nado regain their numerical composure with a sumptuous four tracker from new york renaissance man quinn lamont luke (bing ji ling) loose and limber after a chakra aligning cover of loose ends for phantom island last summer, the paqua frontman brings his linen suit and boat shoes to the good ship nado, joining moonboots and boardman for a relaxed session of horizontal dancing. taking a pleasant vacation from his trademark blue eyed soul, qll packs up the mic and lets the music do the talking, treating us to a dreamy quartet of instrumental grooves.

bopsides first release for 2016 comes from label owner tadd mullinix, releasing under his birth name for the first time since 2002s panes on ghostly international. this album is comprised of 3 long form experimental electro-acoustic compositions, 2 of which clock in around the 15 minute mark, and another clocking in around 9 minutes, taking you fully into the imagination of an artist who is constantly experimenting and redefining the sonic landscape. recorded on a variety of equipment and instruments, these 3 recordings capture a human side and sense of playfulness, while at the same time taking you into the heart of darkness.

escapism, the berlin party series, steps over the threshold into label territory after putting on quality techno nights in the german capital for more than two and a half years. kicking off the label is the polish born and berlin-based glos, who is well known for his work on ressort imprint. on prayers three original tracks showcase his love for ambient music, as well as intelligent techno and sound design. belgian newcomer border one (wolfskuil, stockholm ltd) is in charge of remix duties, taking the slow churning groove of collapse and transforming it into dance floor focused material.

hard edged metallic beat techno, shawn o sullivan picks up right we he left off on his last -this coercion pt.i- ep earlier this year. again we get driving, sharp machine music not so far from the birmingham school of the 90s sound with this latest ep. o sullivan has a knack with eloquently pummeling the listener as demonstrated here, the track fully automated being the perfect example as it airs out midway through taking a break from the punishment. top stuff..

after the nuclear arms test that was the brain poacher black label, canary islands resident gilmer galibard returns to the lobster family via lucid, murky sub-label mörk. taking a much more languid and contemplative approach to his followup, “lost tapes” finds itself washed ashore on a waves of warm, translucent, salt-infused techno and house.

a side track ‘’1840&#8242,’ (feat. contrapunct) is the result of taking a violin built by jean-baptiste vuillaume in the year 1840, played by our in-house virtuoso now known as contrapunct and making a sample kit / sound kit with it yes, this means all the sounds you hear on this song are sourced from an old and beautiful violin. using original recordings combined with different manipulation techniques, the trio deliver to the plate over 12 minutes of intensity. one can explain it like this perhaps……….. you are high in the blue sky walking a high wire over an ocean of beautiful coral reef, still maintaining balance, but looking down at the view beneath and thinking- “if i got to go- there cannot be much better ways!

fabrizio martina, the man behind jolly mare, is a champion turntablist, with a master degree in mechanical engineering and a phd in vibration dynamics under his belt. he s currently a full time producer and dj, taking part in festivals across europe from sonar to harvey s discotheque stage at bestival. a graduate of red bull music academy in new york, he has opened acts from masters at work to roy ayers, worked with the likes of soul clap and thundercat, and has already been featured in the likes of pitchfork, mixmag and okayplayer with his dream-like brand of cosmic disco and house.

after a five year absence the illusive cottam label returns. since the original series paul has travelled the world djing, released on labels such as aus & versatile and started his own imprint ruff draft for his own original productions and tracks from other producers. currently taking a break from djing & concentrating on production it felt like the right time to reactivate the label that started it all with some new under-the-counter specials. first up we have ‘mixing tool’, a heavy beat and percussion setting the dark & foreboding tone, the unease increasing like something is creeping up behind you until the distant war cries reveal themselves - a deep track that is much more than the title suggests. next up, the long awaited vinyl release for the cottam re-wiring of a classic film title track, mixing the best elements of the originals synth score with a club ready beat and acid that adds to the original - this is one of the finest carpenter reworks you ll hear.

sound carrier volume 8it’s back to the cosmos with the latest instalment in chris carrier’s always-on-point series, sound carrier. the label is a home for the prolific paris artist’s techno stylings, and no.8 in the series focuses on a galactical fight theme – taking us from terra firma up into the skies and beyond. the first track, ‘alien blaster pistol’, couldn’t be more self-explanatory. mysterious keys parade over an ominous bassline while the beats keep things moving neatly. gentle chimes and bleeps are added, initiating a dialogue between the various high frequencies located in the top end. next up is ‘mahem (magneto hydrodynamic explosive munition)’, which steps into familiar sound carrier territory, that is… slightly unhinged. rolling along at a steady pace, the tune is rough, yet light with shimmering effects and charming wobbly chunks of bass. on side b chris gets gnarly on us with ‘earth invasion’. it’s the beginning of the end, so of course the music has to match that frightening prospect. gruff beats and stomping bass collide with cymbals, crunchy snares and mutant acid licks to create a beast. finally, ‘haumea brigade’ takes us into the twilight zone again, whirring fx float above hard-hitting beats and a mean b-line. eerie pads help to maintain a chilling tone throughout. deadly, the soundtrack to the end of days here on earth... prepare to evacuate!

mixing abstract hip-hop and house, blutch s style is mind-blowing and striking, with touches of groove and heat. borrowing from pépé bradock, francis inferno orchestra,cuthead, andrés, shigeto and massive attack, blutch has forged a unique musical identity all along his career, always with this strong desire to combine several universes into a single entity.
in january 2015 blutch revealed his creative genius with his first ep, equilibrium. he will soon revisit a voluptuous set mixing trip hop, the softness of electronica and a hypnotic deephouse. requilibrium unites 9 artists in one project that represents blutch’ diverse musical spectre. friends, idols, people who we loved to collaborate with, spend time with, get to know better. the r stands for the remix, the reinterpretation of blutch’ ep equilibrium. each artist gives new life to one of the tracks, spicing them up to their liking. cuthead transforms « skyview » in a straight-up house floor killer while maxime dangles takes « chocolates & hamburgers » to gloomy, cold electronic heights. between these two extremes the music gradually and cleverly evolves track by track. melodiesinfonie opens up in complete serenity with his take on « a. » which takes us straight into summer with our feet in the sand. tito wun follows up perfectly with his version of “wildstar” that is stacked with groovy samples. next up is keroué, member of the band fixpensill. he puts his rhymes on a stellar edit by ywnwa. jenovah choses to take “deep diving” on a bass-driven path while pavane sees and raises that with an orchestral version of anyoma. it’s up to the brothers ark & pit spector to close out the ep by taking « elis » into deeper territory.

following last summers acclaim ruede hagelsteins long player apophenia, we once again revisit the album, this time with a few stunning remixes from the drifter, can be love synth, and ruede himself of the hugely popular footprints feat. c.a.r.. up first is the drifter and he turns out what may be his best remix to date with a swelling, emotional ride that will most definitely be an anthem for the coming summer. taking a different approach, yet just as engaging, ruede reworks his original into a dark, looping psychedelic odyssey perfect for late nights or early mornings. can love be synth rounds out the remixes with a gorgeous pop-esque twist on the original choosing to focus on live instrumentation and retro synthesis resulting in a cross-over favorite. and finally, for all the times you want the vibe without the vocal, a dub version of the original gem.

dutch disco dons kraak&smaak make their debut on razor-n-tape with a pair of boogie originals pressed to wax for the first time ever, featuring two remix gems from ben sun and tiger & woods! the soulful vibes run deep on way back home, with ben sun and t&w taking us to frankie and shepp town, respectively, on their mixes. and with its synthy uptempo disco stomp, seb s party rounds out this wonderfully varied 4-tracker perfectly.

the find of the year? hidden amongst the master tapes for that roberta flack song written by stevie was stevie s own guide vocal, never heard of until now.. not just a basic guide vocal, but a full on, passionate stevie performance that makes this sound like a long lost stevie classic, overshadowing roberta s sweet vocal delivery, taking this soul masterpiece to new heights. with stevie on drums and keys also, the master at the top of his game. on the flip side, a classy slice of philly disco, reflexed without the rather dated and cheesy linda clifford song, focusing on the killer grooves and morphing it into a horn / guitar riff laden track, hands in the air style!

his new ep on code is law features a great talent who has his roots based in the lithuania jungle & dubstep circles. this record contains heavy techno with concepts of modern times electronic beats and oldschool vibes. the whole sounddesign got a rough and raw aesthetic while all tracks are taking focus on the dancefloor with a massive bassdrum, evil vocals and rhythmic synthlines.

something special from camp critical as two of electronic music’s leading lights lock horns for a vs battle of epic proportions. taking the jungle fleck of “mind & spirit” from sam’s “wasted days” lp of last year and one of breakage’s most memorable cuts from way back when (2005), the results are as you’d expect from these two. utterly essential listening.

amphia celebrates its 10th release with a two-tracker ep from cezar lazar.
both tracks reflect his signature sound, taking time to evolve into soundscapes that expand outside the familiar borders. the latin american influences embedded in * choice of ancillaries* leave us hints of its vivid melody surfacing beneath its tight percussions. on the b side we find its darker counterpart, * grounds and shields*, treating us with a more acoustic flow, sewn graciously around the incisive bassline.

tresor records proudly presents the second chapter in mønic’s musical journey on the label. head of osiris music, mønic is an accomplished producer whose style can be defined as raw yet exceptionally refined, allowing for a certain industrial inspiration to ooze from his exquisite sound design. ‘four sides of truth’ opens a conversation between pristenely defined low frequencies and an infinity of fleeting, chirping synth layers. this discussion will continue throughout the record, taking additional drums into the exchange and swirling into ‘point to the sun’ in full panning effect. on the other side, lower frequencies undoubtedly take over and win the argument in ‘self doubt is worthless’. uk-based kamikaze space programme contributes with a revisited version of ‘morse’, initially released on the parsons hill ep. preserving the abrasive textures of the original, ksp dramatically raises the track’s thrilling factor.

taking the release-portfolio into account, rampa built over the last years on keinemusik, him adding a new ep to the label s catalogue is worth every credit of trust. and this very “trust” ep is living up to that not only by its name. it certainly offers value for money, considering km-releases have mostly been two-trackers. there are four cuts on this one, each one following a different approach, making it also a hella versatile record.

alex aq constructed “don’t break” and “shake it” as a reflection of the sounds heard at the club. pounding drums, rhythmic, scattered synths, white noise, and choice vocal snips that send you into a trance are the core characteristics of both tracks created by the cubanmeister.
on the flip, myles serge of knotweed records and his own label (ms) remixes “don’t break it”, taking it in a trippy direction, with 808 drums and dreamy stabs that sound fresher than ever.
last but not least, lpz’s own techno duo p. lopez & octavio take “shake it” and turn it into a techno monster consisting of heavy stabs and an undeniable groove.
